Jerry G. Bawcom

Jerry G. Bawcom was the 15th president of Texas Wesleyan University and served as president from 1984-1991. His inauguration was held on September 16 1985 and Jon Brumley was the keynote speaker. Brumley was the CEO of Southland Royalty Company and served as the chairman and vice chair of the Texas State Board of Education from 1984 to 1988.
Growing up in West Texas, Bawcom received his Bachelors and Masters degrees from Texas Tech University and his Doctorate from North Texas State University. Prior to his presidency at Texas Wesleyan University, Bawcom served as the Dean of Students and Vice President for Student Life at Texas Wesleyan University as well. He has also been an Instructor of Physical Education/Coach, Instructor of Education, and Associate Professor of Educational Psychology.

Jerry G. Bawcom served as 15th President of Texas Wesleyan University from 1984-1991. Prior to his official term as president, he served as the interim president after Jon Fleming's service ended. Bawcom served as both staff and faculty prior to becoming president.
Jon Brumley was the keynote speaker for the convocation of Jerry G. Bawcom as president. At the time, Brumley was the CEO of Southland Royalty Company and chairman of the Texas State Board of Education under the appointment of Govenor Mark White. He received his Bachelors from University of Texas-Austin and a MBA from the University of Pennsylvania.
Under his leadership as chairman, Brumley saw the implementation of Texas Legislature HB 72 and HB 246. House Bill 72 enacted public school system reforms like raises for teachers and supporting property-poor school disctricts financially. House Bill 246 revised the state's public school curriculum and establishes English-language arts; other languages; mathematics; science; health; physical education; fine arts; social studies; economics; business education; vocational education; and Texas and United States history as basic subject areas.
